Grupo Salinas owns the TV network TV Azteca, which during two decades was the only competition of Televisa in open-TV. In its first four years of operation, from 1993 to 1997, TV Azteca reached 33% of the national audience. During the same period, the audience of Televisa went from 90% to 67%.

One year later, its presence increased when the government authorized “adn40” to be transmitted as open-TV on national level. “adn40” is the third channel of the company which until then was only transmitted for free in the country's capital.

Besides the TV netwrok, Grupo Salinas owns banks, companies for financial services, nonprofit foundations and two stock exchange companies: Grupo Elektra S.A.B. de C.V. and T.V. Azteca S.A.B de C.V. During 2017, Grupo Elektra was the company with the highest profit at the Mexican Stock Exchange Market by increasing the value of its shares for 166%.

The founder and president of Grupo Salinas is Ricardo Benjamín Salinas Pliego. In 2017, this multimillionaire appointed three of his children–Ninfa, Benjamín and Hugo Salinas Sada– as Vice Presidents of the Executive Committee of the Board of Grupo Salinas.

Grupo Salinas has its origins in 1906, with the founding of the first furniture factory and furniture shop “Salinas y Rocha” in the city of Monterrey , State of Nuevo León. The second big phase in the development of the Group is in 1950, with the opening of the shop for credit sales of household appliances “Elektra”, which back then was mainly producing radios and TV sets and whose General Director was Hugo Salinas Price, father of Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego. The latter takes the presidency over “Grupo Elektra” in 1987 and six years later he will found TV Azteca.

In 1994, Grupo Elektra gets listed on the New York Stock Exchange Market and two years later it will sign a contract with Western Union for electronic transfer of money. Grupo Salinas entered the banking sector in 2002 when it simultaneously opened 800 branches of the so called “Banco Azteca” within the space of its stores Elektra and Salinas y Rocha. Currently there are more than 7000 Elektra shops in Mexico, United States, Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Panama and El Salvador.
